Don’t Lose Access: Why Your ChatGPT Email Address Matters
When setting up your ChatGPT account, the email address you use can make or break your long-term access. Unfortunately, OpenAI doesn’t do a great job of warning new users about common pitfalls. Here’s what you need to know before it’s too late:
- Don’t use a “+alias” address
Gmail lets you add “+something” after your email name (likeyourname+chatgpt@gmail.com). While great for filtering, these don’t work well with ChatGPT logins. If you create an account this way, you may not be able to log in from other devices — and if you’re ever logged out, you could be permanently locked out. - Avoid using your work email
Your account is tied permanently to the email you signed up with. There’s no way to change it later. If you leave your job and lose access to that company email, you’ll lose your ChatGPT account too. - Phone number verification limits
OpenAI used to require a phone number to verify accounts, with each number only usable three times. That’s not much flexibility — and if you burn through your numbers, creating or recovering accounts gets tricky. - No warning or fixes in place (yet)
These issues are widely experienced by users, but they aren’t well-publicized and there’s no easy fix.
Best practice: Always use a personal, permanent email address (without “+aliases”) that you’ll keep access to long term.
AI is powerful, but losing your account because of an email quirk is an unnecessary headache. Make the right choice up front, and you won’t have to fight for access later.
